One of Kato-Sensei’s favorite sayings was “True victory is victory over oneself”
(Masakatsu agatsu). He shared the following with me about ten years ago. “Masakatsu,
that’s when you know yourself. Find the way of the divine wisdom, not your own limited
intelligence. Try to understand that which comes from the heart (Kokoro), not from the
head.”
Kato-Sensei had great courage, he always lived his life seeking to find his own way
forward, without being influenced and distracted by others. He often said “You cannot
live your life to please others, you must live your own life, we all must live our own lives.”
When I lived in Yokohama, I taught a small Aikido class to children and adults on
Wednesday afternoons. Kato-Sensei would spend 2 hours on trains and walking to come
down each week and teach for two hours. We would then go out to eat and finally he
would begin his two hour journey back to his home in Tokyo. He did this every week, and
it was such a demonstration of his dedication to sharing his love of Aikido and his
incredible generosity.
Thank you Kato-Sensei for all you have done for me and for all of your students. With
love and appreciation, wishing you peace on your journey.
Your student,
Brian Heery
