Kato Shihan was one of the great aikido teachers. His aikido was martial and flowing,
watching was like seeing O Sensei in action and taking ukemi for him was always an
illuminating experience. I was privileged to have been his student for the last 5 years
and will miss him deeply. He was a kind and generous man, possessing a deep natural
humility which brought him a life wisdom that all around him partook of, even when they
did not understand the language he spoke. We are slowly coming to the end of a
generation which can never be replaced. Honor and respect to a great man and
strength to all those who knew him.
加藤師範は偉大な合気道指導者のひとりでした。勇ましく流れるようなその合気道は、
まるで大先生の演武を見ているかのようでした。先生の受け身を取ることは、つねに目
を開かれるような体験でした。私はこの 5 年間、先生の弟子として学ぶ幸運に恵まれて
きましたが、先生を失って深い悲しみを覚えています。たとえ先生の話す言葉はわから
なくても、親切で気前の良い先生は、その持ち前の謙虚さで、周囲の人々すべてが共感
できるような人生の知恵をお持ちでした。私たちは徐々にひとつの世代の終わりを迎え
ようとしていますが、それが元に戻ることはありません。この偉大な先生に名誉と尊敬
を、そして先生を知る人すべてに力をお与えくださいますように。
