Table of Contents

We do weapons practice with a bokken (wooden sword), a jo (short staff), and a tanto (wooden knife). These are used to help us understand Ma-ai (martial distance), ashi-sabaki (foot movement), Tai-sabaki (body movement) as well as the form of the techniques.

The weapons may be purchased through Garcia Sensei.
Can women be good at Aikido?
Aikido is thought to be an excellent martial art for women. In Aikido, we teach that in order to do the techniques correctly, you must relax. Typically, men use stored tension in the shoulder and arm areas to do their techniques. Women, not having that same shoulder and arm strength tend to be more relaxed and thus work from their centers and they usually become better at this faster than men. While we men put on flashy shows at times, women can be just as effective and actually have to be better than a man, again, because of the lack of the natural body strength that a man naturally feels, women must execute better and they usually are better on a higher percentage than men are.
